Questions about resoling

How do I get my shoes to you for a resole?

Fill out my Info Form so I have all your details.

Just put them in the post, NZ post is the cheapest.

Send to... Po Box 311 Takaka 7142

Can you please include a note with your shoes that has your name and phone number as sometimes, if your details are just written on the outside of the package, it becomes illegible for me to read due to wear and tear during shipping.

Can I drop my shoes off?

Yes, you can drop your shoes off, with your name and phone number, into my drop box at 52 Rangihaeata Rd, Takaka.

I won't start repairing shoes if they don't have contact details.

How do I get a quote?

Please have a look at the "Pricing" page to get an estimate of your resole and shipping price

See the FAQ's page to self assess your own rands.

You can certainly send us photos if you still have queries.

We can only fully assess your shoes after we receive them.

How do I pay?

1. I'll email or text you when your shoes are finished.

2. Pay by bank transfer.

3. Once payment is received I will put shoes in the post.

Can you resole all shoes?

We resole most climbing shoes.

I don't resole La Sportiva Theory's sorry.

Can you do edgeless shoes? Genius, Futura..etc

Unfortunately I can't get the original spare parts from La Sportiva yet! I'm currently working on that.

I can replace the sole with a standard sole.

How long will it take?

*Please keep an eye on our Home page for up to date information regarding current turnaround time.

We suggest having extra pairs of climbing shoes while you are waiting for a pair to be resoled

Please note that your resoles are handcrafted, this is a process that takes time

What is a rand repair & do I need one?

This answer deserves a full page of its own. Go to Rands

Rand self assess

To self assess:

New rand rubber is 1.8mm - 2.5mm thick. Worn rand rubber needs to be at least 1mm thick to take a resole.

Firstly look for areas of abrasions or holes.

Feel for inconsistency in rubber thickness. Feel for soft spots indicating worn, thin rubber.

Feel for usually horizontal indents or creases around the toe box area.

If these are present, then the rand rubber may be too thin to take a fresh resole.

Feel and push around the big toe area to gauge the thickness of the rand. If it feels less than 1mm thick it likely needs to be replaced

If you definitely 'DON'T WANT THE RANDS REPLACED please let me know as I will do them if I think it is necessary. (If you choose to not have the rand repaired and the rand on your shoes wears out soon after resoling, I take no responsibility, obviously!

Can you replace the rand without replacing the sole?

No, the rand cannot be replaced without also replacing the sole.

The rand wraps around a climbing shoe and the sole covers the lower part of the rand.

Can you resole a shoe more than once?

Yes, you can resole shoes multiple times depending on the condition of the leather, stitching and on a few factors such as the type of shoe and how early they have been resoled each time.

However, I only resole shoes that I have resoled first time as its too hard to do a good job when going over someone elses work (if they have been resoled previously by Torquil from Lianberis resoles I will resole them).

What is a structural shoe repair?

A structural repair is where the stitching in the leather has come apart under the rand, or you have gone throught the rand rubber and damaged the stitching.

This gets repaired before a new rand is applied.

There is a small cost for this service.

What rubber do you use?

Vibram Grip 3.5mm (Bumper Rand)

Rubber will be replaced like for like where possible unless you'd prefer something specific. Just state your preference on the order form.

Can you resole approach shoes and walking boots?

I'm sorry but at the moment we only do climbing shoes.

Should I wash my shoes?

DON'T wash your shoes please, even if you think you are doing me a favour.

Washing may remove the smell but it also removes the natural olis from the leather, making it dry out and crack.

Also Please don't put powder into the shoes before you post them to me the power plays havoc with the gluing

Should I put in deodoriser power?

Please Please Please don't put deodorizer powder into the shoes before you post them to me, the powder plays havoc with the gluing process.

Should I remove the shoe lacing?

Please DON'T take out the laces before you send your shoes as it makes the resoling very difficult for me!

I will charge $15 for the replacement of new laces if there are none in the shoes on arrival.

Will my shoes still feel the same?

I will do everything I can to preserve the shape your feet have worn into your shoes. After a few climbs they should feel like your nicely worn in shoes just with nice sticky rubber and an edge again.

The better the condition of the shoes when I resole them, the less the shape will change.

Also some shoes hold their shape much better than others, for example most La Sportiva & Scarpa are excellent to resole, where as 5.10 Anasazis aren't so good. If you are resoling your Anasazis make sure you catch them early.

I posted my shoes, can I check you have received them?

All climbing shoes we have received have been logged into our system.  Please allow 4-5 weeks from when we received them before checking in with us to track them. I prefer an email. rockcobblernz@gmail.com
